Bearded iris 'Alcazar'
Iris germanica L. 'Alcazar'
Under the enigmatic name of bearded iris, also called German in other languages, is none other than the well-known and well-loved iris. It grows up to 120 cm tall, blooming in early summer. The iris is known to delight the eye with specimens of an unusually wide range of colors, from jet-black to snow-white, although our favorite iris of the Alcazar variety boasts petals of a deep purple hue. The scythe, native to the Mediterranean coast, prefers sunny sites with sufficiently moist soil. The iris, with its exceptionally ornate physiognomy, has also become an icon of popular culture, often appearing in art, one of Vincent Van Gogh's favorite flowers, and as the inspiration for the popular candy name, irises.
