Rhododendron catawbiense
The catawba rosebay, native to the shady forests of North America, needs acidic soil (pH 4-5.5) and little sun to fully bloom. This heath, brought to Europe in the 19th century, tolerates frost very well, but its delicate physiognomy is very sensitive to strong winds. This unique plant is a species-protoplast of many prized garden varieties, so it is the original from which inspiration has been drawn in creating new varieties.
