Rhododendron obtusumum
Rhododendron obtusum
The popular name for this rhododendron is Japanese azalea. It has been cultivated since 1844, and was imported from the country of cherry blossoms, for which it was certainly competition. Like other rhododendrons, it needs soil with an acidic pH (pH 4-5.5) and a position in a semi-shaded or slightly sheltered corner so that it can grow and flower back to us. Although not tall, it has graceful inflorescences in warm colors (from white, through the entire spectrum of pinks and reds) and small red hairs on young shoots. Japanese azalea looks charming as an ornamental in oriental gardens. It partially sheds its leaves for the winter.
