Cucurbits
Cucurbitaceae Juss.
A family of plants belonging to the order Cucurbitales, comprising nearly 1000 species. These plants typically grow in tropical and subtropical regions.
This family includes many useful plants, consumed as vegetables, fruits (such as pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon), and also used as medicinal and oil-producing plants. Cucurbitaceae plants are usually annual or perennial climbing plants, which climb using single or branched tendrils.
The most desired part of cucurbit plants is their magnificent fruits—fleshy, juicy berries with one or multiple seeds (pumpkins can weigh over 50 kg) or capsules. The fruits generally have flattened seeds containing a substantial amount of fat.
Among the most popular species, cultivated for thousands of years, are pumpkin, zucchini, marrow, pattypan squash, cucumber melon, common cucumber, and bottle gourd. Common cucumber has been cultivated in Poland since the Middle Ages. Pumpkin originates from South America, and its seeds were brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus.
