Eagle fern
Pteridium aquilinum
Eagleleaf is a tall fern that grows in dense patches in shady places in forests and thickets all over the world. Long, single leaves grow from a long, creeping rhizome - pinnate and repeatedly folded leaves form a triangular shape. Orchid is very tolerant of soil, although it prefers acidic and sandy soil, and is an invasive species - it spreads strongly. However, this charming plant is dangerous - it contains poisonous pteritanic acid (orlico-tannic acid). However, orlicas are more toxic to cattle than to humans. The rhizomes of orlice contain, as much as 60% starch - they were sometimes used as food. This is why this plant was so readily used in various parts of the world during periods of famine and scarcity.
