Rowan
Sorbus aucuparia L.
The rowan, better known by the name rowan, is found throughout Poland, as well as in southwest Asia and western Siberia. Its fruits are favored by birds, which sometimes get caught by this enticing lure, and people interested in herbalism, who are also tempted by the vivid color of the sunset. Rowan is a host for the caterpillars of the butterfly Gastropacha quercifolia, and some forest animals. Although common, rowan is highly valued for its decorative qualities, making it brighten up gloomy garden corners. It feels best planted as a solitary, and is resistant to pollution - perfect for planting in cities and along roadsides. Sorbus aucuparia L. looks charming when it blooms, and especially in autumn, when it is sprinkled with red clusters and the feathery leaves shimmer with a wealth of colors - from yellow through orange to fiery red.
