Saucer magnolia
Magnolia soulangeana
The saucer magnolia is most often found as a large shrub, less often as a tree. This variety was bred in 1820-26 in France, which almost coincided with Frederic Chopin's emigration from Poland there. Beautiful and undemanding (which rarely goes hand in hand), magnolia repays us with spring blooms when we provide it with a sunny position with slightly acidic and fertile soil, in a place well sheltered from the cold wind. The delicate magnolia badly tolerates sulfurous frosts, during which frost stagnation forms in the moist soil in winter. Thus, the melancholy Tango Magnolia, by Russian singer Alexander Vertynsky, was surely inspired by his lamentation over the fact that he could not plant a beautiful magnolia in front of his Siberian dacha.
