Swiss cheese plant
Monstera deliciosa
This showy evergreen vine, native to Central and South America, is bravely breaking records of popularity for house and office plants. The swiss cheese plant is a member of the Araceae (pictorial) family - similar to anthuriums. The long aerial roots by which the plant climbs to support itself - were used by the inhabitants of subtropical America to make ropes. These wonderful plants feel best at 20-30˚C, in a shady place with high humidity. Young monstera leaves - bright green and full with age darken and become perforated - hence the name hollow. Undoubtedly, the monstera leaf motif has conquered the world - which plant is now so readily used in design, planted in apartments? Perhaps the ease of cultivation, the longing for wild nature or perhaps the unique beauty of its leaves?
